The BUTTERFLY PROJECT is an Interactive Installation Project - developed by visual artist TUNDE TOTH.

Inspired by workshops facilitated as part of the National Drawing Day events at the Butler Gallery in Kilkenny City in 2013, this programme is designed to take these workshops to a different level creating an ongoing, interactive, inclusive, participatory project `moving` between two venues and featured in two arts festivals in Co. Kilkenny. The project started at The Abhainn Ri Festival in Callan in July and continues at Tunde`s temporary exhibition space in Thomastown during the 40^th Kilkenny Arts Festival.

Visitors and workshop participants are invited to contribute to the large scale, ongoing indoor/outdoor installation by making striking, colourful butterflies – using traditional Origami techniques, contemporary Silk Fibre Papermaking processes and plaster cloth sculpting/modelling.

CALLAN Programme - Phase 1:

29th - 30th - 31st July (Mon-Tues-Wed): 1 - 4pm

This programme is not a workshop schedule, it is run on a `drop-in, drop-out` basis through each afternoon. Visitors are invited to participate and add their own creations to the installation. 

Origami: € 5 per person

Silk Fibre Papermaking: € 9 per person - including materials and your own small butterfly to take with you.

THOMASTOWN Programme - Phase 2 - WORKSHOPS:

6^th – 7^th – 8^th August (Tues-Wed-Thurs):  11am – 1pm

12^th – 13^th – 14^th August (Mon – Tues – Wed):  11am – 1pm

€ 15 per participant per day, including all materials and your own unique butterfly to take with you!

This is a family oriented programme: all workshops are suitable for children from 7 years of age, young people and adults!

Dear Everyone,

I hope you all had a great start to the New Year - wishing you a Happy, Healthy and Creative 2012!

I have had a very busy pre-Christmas time with the Christmas Village Fair at Mount Juliet, Co. Kilkenny and two group exhibitions that are still ongoing until the end of this month:

So if you happen to be in these areas before the end of January - do call around to view these inspiring selections of works!


Our workshops are starting with a BATIK Weekend Course in January, followed by a PAPERMAKING Weekend  at the end of February OR on the first weekend of March - this is yet to be confirmed....
Workshops are held at The Studio in Bennettsbridge, Co. Kilkenny.

Details of the BATIK Course as follows:

28 - 29 January (Saturday, Sunday) 10am - 5pm
Batik Techniquesfor beginners and participants with some previous experience
in Batik and fabric dyeing processes

This is a weekend programme designed to give you the option to choose a
one day introductory level course (on Saturday only) or a two-day course (full weekend).

Saturday's workshop introduces basic and contemporary processes of BATIK - an ancient fabric dyeing and decorating technique where hot wax is used as a resist on cloth. Participants will work on approximately 2 - 3 images/designs, using pure beeswax, paraffin wax and fibre reactive dyes on cotton cloth and will complete works with 2 - 3 layers of wax drawing and topical dyeing (up to 3 colours)
 Sunday's workshop takes these processes further, allowing for more colours as well as covering various combinations of wax, introducing scratched and crackled textures, copper stamps and alternative tools. This programme also introduces batik on handmade papers.
 Fees:
€   75 - for Saturday  including all materials used during the day
€ 135 - for the full weekend  including all materials needed

“A Journey - Layers and Readings” An exhibition of Experimental Paper Art and Print by Tunde Toth

at Cork Vision Centre St. Peter's, North Main Street, Cork

2nd - 26th April 2011 Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm Opening reception: The exhibition will be officially launched on Friday 8th April 2011 at 6pm by Mr Ferenc Jári, Ambassador of the Republic of Hungary, followed by a musical performance by the Bolero Wind Ensemble of the city of Győr, Hungary. Marking the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, the exhibition is a selection of works in the media of experimental paper art, fibre and combined media intaglio mono print. Inspired by surfaces, layers and textures of landscapes and urban environments, Tunde's work is also a 'reading' process: an exploration and investigation of traces, marks, imprints, space and distance, fragmentation and disappearance. Her current practice evolves around the observation, collection and transformation of a visual material, unearthed form natural and built environments, fragmented forms and the changing images of land/city scapes. Multi-layered, dream-like visions of landscapes and strong images emerge through her journeys in Hungary ('Enchanted Hills'), Italy ('Bologna series'), Egypt (desert scapes), Ireland ('Horizons'; 'Woodstock Daydream') and Tasmania ('Wilderness'). The finished art work also references and shows its own evolution: the raw material – often collected on location –, the unpredictable elements, the incidental changes that all leave their own marks on the creative process. As a paper artist and paper maker Tunde has been working with natural plant fibres, i.e. cotton, abaca, esparto, bamboo, rush, straw, grass etc, various handmade papers, raw silk fibres, textiles, found objects and old fabrics, lace and soil etc for the past 15 years. She uses techniques and processes which are rooted in the rich traditions of hand papermaking but she continually develops and changes these processes through an experimental approach to the medium, exploring and pushing the boundaries of hand papermaking. She also combines re-used materials with techniques of painting and dyeing – through an exciting process of layering and sculpting fibres. The use of calligraphy and drawing inks, watercolours, fibre reactive dyes – often in combination – allows for the ‘unpredictable’, ‘unrepeatable’ and 'unforseen' in this process. Tunde has introduced intaglio (dry point and carborundrum) print processes into her practice during the last few years – by printing onto silk and plant fibre papers as well as the traditionally used Fabriano. Her prints are experimental, 'mixed media' mono prints where fibres, paper, painting and printed image are layered upon each other creating dynamic, textured works. Tunde Toth's artwork has been selected for a number of solo and group exhibitions in Ireland and abroad including her solo show in the Kilkenny Arts Office ('Land – Scripts' 2009) and the international paper art exhibition "New Paper - Old Land" in Tasmania in 2009. She was awarded the Artlinks Bursary award for Kilkenny in the same year and also undertook a residency at the Ars Longa International Artists Retreat in Cered, Hungary, enabling her to further explore the medium of print making. Tunde was invited to participate in the 20th IAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists) Congress in Tasmania, Australia where she taught workshops on Silk Fibre Papermaking. On her return to Ireland she founded the Irish Network of Paper Artists (INPA)– a network that aims to bring together and assist artists who make or work with handmade papers in various contexts. Tunde has been extensively involved in arts education, arts facilitation and participatory arts projects in Ireland since 2003. She is teaching workshops and courses on various papermaking processes and experimental paper and textile art forms for adults at studio venues and museums in Dublin and Co. Kilkenny. She was selected as artist in residence in a number of primary schools in Co. Kilkenny and Dun Laoghaire and has been developing and managing regular and ongoing arts education programmes at Kozo Studio and Gallery and at The Watergarden Gallery, Thomastown. Her work with children and young people was recently awarded and further encouraged by an Arts Council Bursary Award (2010). 'Land - Scripts' Exhibition - programme update! Artist's Talk, Workshops and Project!

'Land- Scripts' - the exhibition was officially opened last week by Cathaoirleach Michael O'Brien, Mary Butler Kilkenny County Arts Officer and by Mr Ferenc Jári the Ambassador for Hungary at No.76 John Street, Kilkenny Arts Office.

The following upcoming events are organized as part of the exhibition programme and my residency at no. 76 John Street - I hope you can come around and join us!


Illustrated talk on my participation and experience at the 20th IAPMA Congress in Tasmania earlier this year. (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists Congress)
Date and time: Friday November 6th at 1pm at no. 76 John Street.

Collage Project and Workshops on the 13th - 14th November (Friday – Saturday). This is an unusual combination of workshops and a community projects, involving small groups of participants being introduced to basic and experimental techniques of Hand Papermaking in a workshop setting in the actual exhibition space.
Some of the works created at these events by the public will then form a large collage piece that will become part of the 'Land – Scripts” exhibition. This collage will be ultimately formed and shaped collaboratively by the participants and the artist throughout the two days. You will also bring handmade paper pieces home with you!

'Land - Scripts' - Solo Exhibition of New Work in Paper Art by Tunde Toth

"Land - Scripts" - an exhibition of my new works of experimental paper art and prints at Kilkenny County Council Arts Office no. 76 John Street.

My recent work is inspired by the surfaces and textures of landscapes, by rough and ragged seasides - exploring traces, marks, imprints in natural environments.

While working on this new body of work I was awarded the 2009 Artlinks Bursary Award.

Opening Reception: The exhibition will be officially opened by Mary Butler Kilkenny County Arts Officer on Friday October 30th at 6pm.

"Land - Scripts" also features an illustrated talk on my participation and experience at the 20th IAPMA Congress in Tasmania earlier this year.

The talk takes place on Friday November 6th at 1pm at no. 76 John Street.

The exhibition runs from the 22nd of October until the 20th of November, opening times: 9am - 6pm from Monday to Friday, 10am - 5pm on Saturdays of 31st of October, 7th and 14th of November. I will be there on many of the days, so do call in to see me and let me know what you think!!
